The best place to start your Flinders Ranges adventure! Beltana Station (incorporating Puttapa Station) is a fully working sheep and cattle station that offers a variety of accommodation, a cafe & restaurant and a range of activities. Taken up in 1854 by John Haimes, it was first surveyed in 1855 by John McDouall Stuart. In 1862 Sir Thomas Elder acquired Beltana through his brother-in-law Robert Barr Smith. Thus starting a historic journey that would last well over 100 years. The station was the starting point for expeditions including one made famous by Ernest Giles in 1875 to Western Australia. Thomas Elder imported some of the first camels to South Australia and Beltana Station became one of the most successful breeding studs and largest depot for camels in Australia. Including a large bedroom with a King sized bed, a kitchenette with a fridge, television and private outside bathroom..........**SHEARERS QUARTERS..........Historically shearing has been a major part of the station activity at Beltana with up to 90 Shearers employed in the 1870's. At times there were over 17,000 sheep on Beltana and nearby stations would also bring their sheep here to be shorn..... The Shearers Quarters were a comfortable home for the workers with 6-8 men sharing a room for the duration of their contract. To keep everyone entertained there were often dances and cricket matches organised as social activities.....Today Beltana runs mainly Dorper sheep which are known for their prime lamb meat and their ability to shed their fleece, so there is only a small amount of shearing now done at Beltana.....The Shearers Quarters have now been fully renovated and the 11 rooms are air conditioned and can sleep 2,3 or 4 guests. There is a shared kitchen which has both modern equipment as well as a functioning wood oven and stove.
